Boost your child’s immunity and protect them from the severe effects of the COVID-19 virus
The global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic has been going on for over a year now. Many protective measures have been put into place – from lockdowns and quarantines to prevent the spread of the virus in communities, work-from-home setups to ensure employees are still able to earn a living without risking infection, to mask and face shield mandates to ensure those who do have to go out are protected.
Scientists and experts in the medical field have raced to formulate vaccines that can weaken the effects of the virus, and countries all over the world have begun rolling out vaccination programs, starting with those most vulnerable: the elderly and those with comorbidities.
This is certainly good news. While the elderly remain the priority for COVID-19 vaccination, vaccination for minors in the 12 to 17 years old range has finally been greenlighted as of October. A fresh supply of 2.7 million vaccines intended for this age range was also received early this month.[1]
But with an estimated population of 12.7 million, it is likely that the rollout of vaccinations for minors will take some time – and that still does not include children below the age of 12.
As of August, the Department of Health (DOH) reports that there are over 176,000 COVID-19 cases recorded among children below the age of 19, and 466 deaths.[2] Specifically, the highest incidence of COVID-19 occurs in children aged 2 years old. The DOH suspects that this is due to the direct care they receive from their mothers, who might unknowingly be carriers of the virus.[3]
For now, health experts advise parents to make sure their children are kept in a safe, protected environment, and that safety protocols are implemented in the home, such as washing hands and disinfecting anything coming from or used outside.[4]
It is also recommended that children be provided with natural immunity boosters, such as a balanced diet, 8-10 hours of sleep each day, opportunities to keep fit like playing or exercising, and the right vitamin supplements, to keep their bodies strong and healthy.[5]
