In keeping with its core mission of providing accessible, high-quality education, Mapúa University has steadfastly championed gender inclusivity and diversity through the university-wide implementation of its Gender Equality and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Policies.

Known for its academic rigor and emphasis on excellence and innovation, Mapúa introduced these comprehensive guidelines to promote equity and cultivate inclusion on campus. More importantly, these standards assure learners of a safe and conducive space where they feel welcome and appreciated.

To achieve this, the country’s premier engineering and technological institution intentionally established a campus environment where individuals of all sexual orientations, gender identities, and expressions are empowered to reach their full potential.

This approach entailed adopting a zero-tolerance policy on discrimination and harassment based on personal gender identity. The university also integrated diverse perspectives, such as LGBTQIA+ histories and experiences, into its curriculum development to ensure accurate representation, visibility, historical accuracy, social awareness, and reduce prejudices.

To make inclusivity more meaningful to all members of the Mapúa community, the higher education institution (HEI) regularly trains faculty, staff, and students about cultural competence and inclusion. It provides accessible support services, including counselling, safe reporting systems, and reasonable responsive support for those with unique needs.

These inclusive practices are strictly applied across all institutional operations, ensuring that everyone in the community, from students and faculty members to support services staff, is treated fairly and can flourish in their respective areas without fear of ridicule, discrimination, or exclusion.

“Mapúa University’s advocacy for LGBTQIA+ inclusion stems from its core mission and values. As a higher education institution, our programs, initiatives, and efforts are centered on our students, and that means all of our students, regardless of their background or circumstances. No one is left behind. We continuously work together to provide inclusive, equitable, and quality education for all,” said Mr. Patrick Glenn O. Acorin, Mapúa’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Director.

Mr. Acorin also emphasized that students learn better and excel when they feel safe, respected, and affirmed in their identities. Guided by the belief that every learner deserves the opportunity to thrive, the engineering and technological school created an environment where diversity and inclusion are at the heart of campus life. Thus, ensuring that all students, particularly underrepresented groups such as LGBTQIA+ individuals, can progress academically and personally.

In addition to enhanced academic performance and personal development, Mr. Acorin further explained that an inclusive school culture fosters empathy, critical thinking, and open dialogue within the educational community. It also prepares students for an increasingly globally diverse society and workplaces, while paving the way for more responsive and relevant innovations.

Although Mapúa adopted inclusive policies and activities years ago, the university continually reviews and revises its guidelines and monitors compliance to ensure effectiveness. It has recently established the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Office (DEI), which works closely with the Human Resources Department, Faculty Development Office, and Office of Student Affairs and Alumni Relations, to ensure the smooth rollout of DEI initiatives and provide additional training and resources as needed. In the event of violations, the HEI conducts investigations, hearings, and imposes disciplinary actions.

Beyond these well-executed policies, gender-diverse students will find comfort in knowing that they can freely express themselves on campus without judgment. LGBTQIA+ individuals can choose to use their preferred pronouns on the Cardinal Edge learning management system, allowing professors and peers to acknowledge and address them accordingly. They have access to gender-sensitive facilities and services, mental health counselling and support, all-gender restrooms, and a relaxed dress code during informal school activities. Above all, they have a nurturing environment that seeks to see them grow and soar.
